Identifying Different Types of Hydrangeas

My garden pics

Hydrangeas are one of the most bountiful blooms that summer has to offer. The mophead may be the most recognizable hydrangea, but did you know that there are 7 main types of hydrangeas? From the lacecap to the paniculata hydrangea, there are different hydrangea types that actually look quite different from each other.

To help you identify the different types of hydrangeas, FTD created a helpful guide that features real photo examples along with easy care tips. Checkout the guide above, you’ll be sure to learn something new about this gorgeous summer flower!

Be sure to pin for further reference. I am very impressed with FTD's blog. Check it out here because it is very informative and interesting.

  1. Hi Bonnie, Your hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful and you have such lovely gardens. This is one of my favorite summer blooms. I don't have the best yard for growing them here and I miss them. This is a great guide for the gardner, great post.

  2. Good morning, Bonnie. I have several of the Endless Summer hydrangeas (the mophead version), but I have been interested in getting at least one lacecap. I really love the delicate blooms on those. Good, informative post!
Not sure if you're aware or not, but this post published 3X, one after another. You may end up with comments on any of the 3. :)

  3. Hello Bonnie,
I so enjoyed this post as I am over the moon in love with hydrangeas, even though the Texas heat nearly destroys them every single year.
Hydrangeas are in my top 5 favorite flowers. I did pin several photos from this post today, and I so appreciate you sharing this with us.
    Blessing to you,
    Jemma

  6. No I did not know there was so many different types of Hydrangeas. WOW, good to know. Will pin this for sure. I only have two but they look alike except in color. I need to read how to care for them better. Year before last one bloomed like crazy. Last year...NO! This year...bloomed again. They are beautiful. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Bonnie, I'm not sure what happened with my comment! But I wanted to say that your garden is gorgeous and your blooms are such a beautiful color! My hydrangeas did not bloom well this year, and I think it is because we had a very late frost. I would love to add a few climbing bushes to the side of my garage. Enjoy your blooms! Linda

  9. Hydrangea heaven Bonnie! I missed all my June blooms while I was away :( and now my bushes look seriously bad! I bet your home is always filled with beautiful cuttings from your garden! I've never heard of a climbing hydrangea, that sounds wonderful-

  10. Oh, my! I've never seen such a garden of hydrangea blooms. What a treat! I never would have thought about following FTD's blog. Thanks for the tip. I can only grow oak leaf hydrangea here. I've tried others, but Austin is just too hot. I could spend hours among the hydrngeas in your garden.

  11. Wow Bonnie, thanks for sharing this with us! This is great information; I never realized the varieties of Hydrangeas were divided this way. Your hydrangeas are so pretty every year; I always enjoy seeing your pictures. Like Sarah, I never thought of following FTD's blog; I didn't realize they have one. I've pinned this for future reference.

I hope you're having a good summer and staying cool, my friend!

    Hugs to you,

    Denise

  13. Gorgeous hydrangeas Bonnie! I pinned the FTD graphic! My Endless Summer hydrangeas are limping along with our heat and dry weather and summer does seem endless right now. ;) but our Limelight hydrangeas are thriving. Hope you're staying cool.

  15. Hi Bonnie! Your hydrangeas are stunning! I'm hoping that my newly planted this year, oak leaf one, will do well. My other other types, maybe they are mopheads (?), take so much water and the leaves are curling up. Thank you for sharing the information with us on all the varieties!
