Mardi Gras Tablescape

When you think of Mardi Gras you think of carnival parades with colorful costumes, beaded necklaces and New Orleans and Mobile.  Many other U.S. cities have celebrations but being a southerner I think of the Gulf Coast celebrations.

Outside the states, Mardi Gras or Carnival are held inVenice, Rio de Janeiro,  and Quebec to mention a few.
This is the first tablescape I have done depicting a Mardi Gras theme.  The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are green, gold and purple. Green represents faith, gold represents power, and purple represents justice.

Green plates- Paula Deen
Gold chargers- Wal Mart
Flatware - Williams Sonoma
Glasses- Vintage from my MIL
Napkins- Early marriage
Masks, Hats, Beads- My neighbor. Thanks, Barbara!

It has been interesting to learn about the traditions and history concerning Mardi Gras. Mobile has the oldest Mardi Gras festival in the U.S. dating back to 1703, fifteen years before New Orleans was founded.

Vintage glasses from the seventies were my inspiration to create a Mardi Gras
tablescape.

The glasses were hard to photograph because glass reflects and so do shiny objects.
My neighbor is part of a supper club that hosts a Mardi Gras Ball that I have enjoyed attending. I had fun taking pictures of her festive colorful masks, hats and beads and creating a tablescape.
Mardi Gras will be March 4th this year. Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday" is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
The throwing of trinkets to the crowds was started in the early 1870s by the Twelfth Night Revelers.

  4. Oh, my! Your table is just beautiful, Bonnie! You have everything even down to the glasses! Don't you love the brilliant colors of Mardi Gras! Here in Galveston, Mardi Gras is a pretty big deal. We went to the parade yesterday at noon. Some folks decorate their homes as much as folks do for Christmas! Love all of your beads, hats and crowns too. So festive! Thanks for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,

  7. Very pretty!! In England we don't celebrate Mardi Gras, but we celebrate what is either called Shrove Tuesday or more commonly Pancake Day on the same day. We make what we call Pancakes, you would call them crepes in America probably, as they are different than American Pancakes, to use up the last of the good tings in the cupboards before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It is lots of fun! xx

  16. Big love to your mother-in-law!!! Girl, those vintage glasses are the hot diggity bomb and beyond!!! Oh, my gosh! Those are more than perfect for this table!!! It's amazing what kinds of things people manufacture in this world. Who'd have thought someone would come up with those?!??!! They're pretty and they definitely shake it up for Mardi Gras!!!

Your neighbor has some great stuff, too! Anyone who has an annual masquerade or Mardi Gras event or who belongs to a crewe is bound to have shelves or bins overflowing with cool stuff like this! The crowns with the fabric-covered center are really neat. I don't see a lot of those around.

Like Donny & Marie's "Little Bit Country, Little Bit Rock 'n Roll", I'm a Northerner by birth and locale but a Southerner at heart! This table rocks! If you decide to actually celebrate this year, this table will NOT go unnoticed with guests!!!
