Antique Boxes

I wish this 19th century English  antique lapdesk could talk. Who did it belong to? How did it get to the states and when? I bought it from an antique dealer about 18 years ago.

It has a beautiful patina and is in good condition.

I love antique wooden boxes. It is unusual now for boxes to be made of wood. I have several antique boxes I have collected. One is a sewing box, several tea caddies and several are all occasion I guess you would call them. Some have mother-of pearl inlay that I like. Because they are all old they have a history but all I know about them are their approximate age probably 19th century and I bought them at different times over the last twenty years.

The bottom box is not old maybe 50's or newer ~ just guessing. The way the light is shining the box looks worn but it isn't.

Do you like old boxes?

  3. Hi Bonnie,

This is a lovely lap desk! My MIL has one that sits on a wooden stand so that it looks like a small table. Your other antique boxes are so pretty! I love boxes, but I don't believe I have any antique ones. After seeing yours, I would certainly love to have some. :) This is such a pretty bedroom -- I love the tole tray hanging over the bed!

I hope you have a great weekend, Bonnie!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  4. I do love old wooden boxes, too, Bonnie. Most are not that old, but hold the eight sets of silver or silverplate that I cannot resist from estate sales. =/ And, I have one lapdesk. My sister loves old wooden boxes, too. I'm off to go check out the link about the lapdesks! Thank you. blessings ~ tanna

  5. The lap desk IS talking, Bonnie! I can hear it! It's saying, "Please release me. Let me go live with Alycia!" :-) :-) :-) I like old boxes, too. It makes you wonder about how it was made, who was the first to buy it, what they did with it, how it got passed along...there's a story behind each and every one. That's why we have to be careful about what we purge from our own things these days. What's new to us now will be an antique years from now, and someone will wonder about its origins. Maybe we should all put a little note inside every box and piece of luggage we own for future finders!

  11. Hello Bonnie, your collection of boxes are beautiful, and so well cared for. Your bedroom is so very elegant, I am sure your boxes are very happy in their surroundings. I do like boxes, although I do not own any antique ones. When I was in the Antique business I was fortunate to buy and sell some lovely examples and handle others. I tend to prefer simpler boxes, made of yew or fruitwood, but I can appreciate the quality of the finer mahogany, rosewood, and walmut varieties. I also rather liked Tunbridge ware with their heavily inlaid patterns. Thankyou for sharing yours with us.

Many thanks for your very kind e-mail. I thought it was about time I showed my face, although somewhat reluctantly! Enjoy your weekend, love Linda xx

  12. I find myself being drawn to anything vintage these days. Your boxes are lovely. I wonder the same thing sometimes about my finds...who owned them, what kind of home did they come from. I do wish they could talk!
